Print workshop 2

Consistency and Efficiency working with text.
(the technicalities of working with text within in-design)

Master pages
__________
they are templates, useful for working with multiple page documents, achieve consistency throughout the page. If there are common elements that are needed across each page to stay the same.

A Master is the first master page, and it is a template for the document. You can then create a b master, c master etc..
Has a little A to represent A master

Drawn ont he A Master and it will then transfer across tot he other A master pages. You could sue this application for creating the grid, and also things such as headings of books, or page numbers.

You open a facing pages document, if you were making a book. You then would double click the master page add a text box, go to type menu, insert special characters, markers and current page  numbers. On the master pages it will come up with an A, but the rest will have the numbers on.

Use rulers and guides to give horizontal structure to the page. Dragging to the side will give a line across the ruler.
_______
CREATING A NEW MASTER.
You could have a different master for each page of a magazine for example.
If you want pages 3/4 to follow the B aster, then you can drag straight onto the pages so that the template becomes the B master instead of the A master.

___
UNLOCKING MASTER PAGES.

The things that go on the master page are locked, so that if you go onto the other pages you wont be able ton interact with them. So you need to unlock it. The best way to do this is to do, cmd+shift and then when you click on the frame you will unlock it. That has overridden that master page item. So now you an use the frame, to put an mage in etc. Similar with page numbering, you can delete the selection so that the page number does not show up. This is useful when you need to send text behind things. or in-front.

___

DIFFERENT SIZE PAGES, LAYOUTS

The application could transfer across a business card, letterhead, envelope etc. So you may want this in order to have consistency when it comes to branding. So you can have different size pages within one document.

File ad document set up, this is where you can change the page size. When you change them it changes the size within all the document. In the pages palette you can select individual pages and there is a menu at the bottom that will let you edit the page size.

You can use the principle across any publication you are doing.
__

PARAGRAPH WORKING

The blue images are formatting characters. You can use the type menu to show or hide these hidden characters. Useful for when you're working with text.
Paragraphs and spacing, either by creating a gap or indenting the first line of text. Each serves the same purpose, they serve to break up a large block of text.
Removing all spacing in the text, unnecessary formatting.

This works very similarly to spell checking.

More relevant you can click on the @ and it will search for glyphs, or special characters. in our case choose end of paragraph.

You can then click find, and then change, and do this a couple of times to check that its working and then you can click change all to see remove the rest of the formatting.

This helps simplify the text.
Now looking at an alternative way to add spacing to the paragraphs.
Options bar on the left, and then options along the top of the screen.
Two different ways of displaying the text.

You can select all the text and then put in the same amount of spacing throughout the paragraphs.

TABBING
-___-

Hard Return and Soft Return, this is when you hold the shift key and the return key.
You can get rid of the paragraphs and replace with hard return, and then this become one paragraph with separate lines within them.

REVERSED OUT TEXT
___

You change it in the options box to become the width of the text by clicking the option. As well as editing the weight of the stroke. You also have the offset option which will make the rule sit equally around the text.

_____

STYLE SHEETS
__
They are also called paragraph styles. This helps format all paragraphs to the same continuity throughout the document. All of these format structures can be saved as a pre-set, and it allows consistency throughout.

Go to the type menu, and go to paragraph styles. Make sure your hidden characters is turned on so you can see them.

Select an initial paragraph and format it appropriatly. One formated make sure you click within the formated paragraph. Then in the paragraph styles use menu in the right hand side, new paragraph style.

Make sure you always label what paragraph style it will be, and you can create a shortcut using the cmd button and then numbers from the number keys, not the stretch of numbers across the top.

//
Then all you have to do is click within another body of paragraph and hit cmd and 1 and it will apply to that next body of paragraph.

Once you have applied styles, in order to make global changes just double click on the paragraph edit and you can make changes and it will change every instant.
